It was such a pleasure to once again attend the Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators (SCBWI) conference in New York, one of their two major conferences each year. It's so amazing to be living only 4 hours away from NYC now!
I must admit, my head wasn't quite in the right place going into the conference this year. I've been struggling lately with how to make everything work here, now that we are living back in the States. It's hard when you leave an established career and routine, and have to start completely afresh. Exciting, yes. Challenging, YES.
But thank goodness I went. It really helped me regain my motivation and remember why I love making children's literature, and why i NEED to keep making it.
Besides it being such a wonderful community, it's really IMPORTANT. I had a discussion with a friend before I left about having meaning in the work you do. To me, there can be no greater meaning than feeding the imagination of the next generation!
So, thank you SCBWI. You helped me get my mojo back. Not to mention all the great friends and contacts made.
